The soft chime of her phone alarm pulled Sophie from a deep and restless sleep, plagued by dreams where she watched Colin being chased by a dark and menacing figure through tight hallways of an old house. She ran after them, calling Colin’s name, terrified of what would happen if the shadow caught up to him and, worse, what it would do to her when it was finished.

Sophie slapped at the screen of her phone, silencing the music. She lay in place for a moment, rubbed her eyes, and breathed heavily. Sleep pulled at her with warm, sugary arms, entreating her to forget what she needed to do, just roll over and fall back into the thick comfort of the mattress and sheets. With a groan, she managed to sit up, then stand, breaking the spell and freeing her mind to focus on what she needed to do.

With the quiet of a church mouse, Sophie exited the apartment, locked the door behind her, and stepped out into the cold pre-dawn air.

Her breath plumed before her as she walked to the parking lot, searching for the car that belonged to the keys she’d picked up. She had to hand it to the Dempsey’s, they were extremely well prepared. She pressed a button on the keychain and smiled as the lights to a two door BMW convertible flashed in response.

Twenty minutes later, she pulled into her own driveway. As she exited the BMW, she glanced around at the houses around her. All were dark, but she knew that they wouldn’t stay that way for long. It was a workday and people, especially the early risers, would be up and puttering about in the next couple of hours. She retrieved her spare key from its hiding place among the bushes and unlocked the door. Although there was no threat from her neighbors—none of them worked for Krydon,
